Motorola Q9, Vista, USB modem and Telstra

Had a bit of a problem to get my Motorola Q9 phone to work with Vista. It should have been easy, to go online, but these things never are. Here’s how I got it working.

Set the phone to USB Modem

Start – Settings – Connections –USB Device Type – Modem.

Download the Motorola USB drivers

http://www.motorola.com/Hellomoto/Common/Default/USB_Driver_32.zip

http://www.motorola.com/Hellomoto/Common/Default/USB_Driver_64.zip

Install the relevant .msi file

Then plug the phone in to the lappy. Vista now happily detects the phone as a modem and installs it.

Configuring the Modem

Start –Control Panel – Phone and Modems Options – Modems- Smartphone wireless USB modem – properties.

In the general tab click Change settings (continue in UAC) –Advanced – Extra initialization commands type in AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”telstra.internet“,”" then click ok – ok

Set up the Dial up Account

Start –Control Panel – Network and Sharing center –Set up a connection or Network – set up a dial up connection

Pick the Smartphone wireless USB modem In dial-up phone number enter *99#

Leave username and password blank and give it a witty name “Q9 Phone” and connect

Set the location type to Public if the option pops up.

Tweaking the Dial up options

As you don’t need the username and password fields for this at the Dial-up prompt for the Q9 Phone – properties –Options –untick Prompt for name and password

The internet is now yours and the pc now charges the phone at the same time. Magic!

Bluetooth – similar sort of set up, but I like my phone charger magic.

Good work, this fixed my connection problem with XP as well. I initially had some problems with it but after some troubleshooting I found that the all the double quotes in the string need to be the same In the string you suggest AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”telstra.internet“,”” notice that the last double quote is different. I replaced all the double quotes in the string with ” and it worked :)
