Security 401: SANS Security Essentials Bootcamp Style

Not only can you achieve a top notch security certification, but SEC 401 provides credit towards a Masters degree at Charles Sturt University. Credit can be applied to either the Master of Information Systems Security or the Master of Management degrees at CSU when taking the forensic stream.

The second class Security 660: Advanced Penetration Testing, Exploits, and Ethical Hacking is designed as a logical progression point for those who have completed SANS SEC560 Network Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking, or for those with existing penetration testing experience. Students with the prerequisite knowledge to take this course will walk through dozens of real world attacks used by the most seasoned penetration testers.

Taking either class will being an eye-opener given Craig’s knowledge, experience and practical background.

Why SANS Mentor Training?

The SANS Mentor classes are a great training option, in my opinion, for several reasons:

Pace:

The material is covered over a 10 week period which provides lots of time for you to read on your own time and come back to the mentor meetings with questions and get answers. This helps to digest the massive amount of material in smaller, manageable doses. We study 2 or 3 modules each week and that material can be applied immediately on the job. 

Cost:

The cost is significantly reduced. the cost is lower than any other form of SANS training making it very accessible to those who are budget constrained – which these days is many of us. There is an automatic 25% price reduction from the cost of courses delivered at the conferences.  There is no travel or accommodations, so that massive saving in costs.  And finally, I can generally offer an additional discount if you contact me prior to registration.

Networking: 

Don’t overlook this one.  When you are in the 6-day conference courses, you definitely get a change to meet others, talk about your experiences and issues in the field, and maybe even keep in touch via email.  But when meeting for 10 weekly classes with your peers in the same community, that networking experience is enhanced significantly.  You have the chance to really get to know the others in the class by the shared experiences, work through the material and bounce ideas of each other; that’s a great benefit to being part of a local Mentor class.

Size:

Class sizes are typically small – much smaller than what you would find at a SANS conference, which means we can focus more closely on those areas which are difficult for the group

Material:

You get all the same material as you would from the conference course, including the same books, CDs, and even audio files of the full 6-day course lectures.

It’ll be running in Chatswood, Sydney on the starting on Wednesday 21^st of January 2009, every Wednesday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm for ten weeks.There’s plenty of parking and it’s easy to get to via public transport on trains or buses.

My personal approach to this track is constantly evolving from what I see in the real world and from conversations with very smart folks that live and breathe real world security.

Mentoring courses aren’t one way; they are interactive and I hope you bring your thoughts, experience and view points to the material. It helps make the awesome material applicable to you and your environments. I’ll try to keep it relevant, entertaining, occasionally frustrating and worth your time, energy and money.

On the interactive side you’ll be running hands on specific tools against lab machines, just to see what these can do against real systems. This alone provides a very good reason to management why regular patching is a good thing!

What I hope you’ll come away from the ten weeks isn’t that you’ll be able to break in to top security systems; it’s that you have a better capacity to understand how common, freely available tools are being used against you now. Working with that awareness and developing of strategies to build up your own in depth defences and responses to better secure your systems.

For those CISSP’s out there, the course is worth 36 CPE’s.

During the six day madness of the Canberra SANS conference, I met a host of top folk. One of those people, Ashley Deuble , who took the 401 track with me, is now mentoring the SAN 401 track in Brisbane. It starts on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 and well worth getting excited about for those who want to learn about security in IT.

He passed the exam with flying colours and I’m sure will bring his own experiences, flare and passion to mentoring the sessions.
